Community Service

This inspirational community service project brought 60 of our members together to help beautify the facilities for the children of the Gila River Indian Community.  Before we embarked, we were treated to an oral history of the native community, which has endured great hardships throughout the years and has still not lost its sense of generosity and welcome.  We were pleased to hear that the Akimel O'Othom and Pee Posh residents have been granted the return of the water that once flowed through their community and gave them their name: "River People."  To read more about the history of this resilient community, visit the GRIC website.

Two member groups took on the Child Care Center and the Boys & Girls Club facilities.  Our members pulled weeds, cut down trees, painted a gym, moved mountains (large rocks, in any case) and piles of dirt, cleaned, strung beads, hauled branches, and brought a spirit of cooperation and collaboration to this picturesque setting.  Members were treated to native dances, blessings and heartfelt gratitude.
