Transformations: Reflections, Translations, Rotations

Tip

You will need to know how to reflect points and figures across the x- and y-axes and across other lines in the xy-coordinate plane.

Sample Problem

In the xy-coordinate plane, a line segment with endpoints P (−2, 2) and Q (2, 2) is reflected over the x-axis and then rotated 90° clockwise about its new midpoint. What will be the resulting coordinates of point P after these transformations?

Answer Options

(A) (-2, -2)
(B) (-2, 0)
(C) (0, 0)
(D) (0, -2)
(E) (0, -4)

View Correct Answer

(C) (0, 0)

When the line segment with endpoints P (−2, 2) and Q (2, 2) is reflected over the x-axis, the endpoints of the new line segments will have coordinates (−2, −2) and (2, −2), respectively. The midpoint of the reflected segment is (0, −2). When the new line segment is rotated 90° clockwise about point (0, −2), the resulting coordinates of point P will be (0, 0).
