How Do You Solve Verbal Analogy Questions?

Tip

A useful strategy for solving analogies is to use a bridge sentence. A bridge sentence is a sentence that defines the relationship between two words using the letters X and Y in place of the words themselves. For instance, the bridge sentence An X is not Y defines the relationship between the words coward and brave. When those words are substituted for X and Y, the result is a true sentence: “A coward is not brave.” Of course, there are other word pairs that fit the same bridge sentence—for example, fool and wise. What this tells you is that the relationship between coward and brave is the same as the relationship between fool and wise. The two word pairs are analogous.
