What is an Analogy?

Tip

An analogy, very generally, is a statement saying that one thing is similar to another thing. A simple example would be “Life is like a roller-coaster ride.” The analogy questions in the verbal section of the SSAT ask you to compose a special kind of analogy, called a verbal analogy because it has to do with the meanings of words. A verbal analogy is a statement saying that the relationship between one pair of words is similar to the relationship between another pair of words. For example, the verbal analogy “Swim is to water as fly is to air” says that the verb “swim” is related to the noun “water” in the same way that the verb “fly” is related to the noun “air.” To swim is to move through water, just as to fly is to move through the air.
