Tip

Set theory problems can be presented in either a real-life or an abstract setting. Problems in a real-life setting can be solved more easily if you draw a Venn diagram to display the information given in the problem.

Sample Problem

Each student in a group of 34 students participates in either chorus or band. If 20 students participate in chorus and 22 students participate in band, how many students participate in chorus but not in band?

Answer Options

(A) 8
(B) 10
(C) 12
(D) 14
(E) 16

View Correct Answer

(C) 12

It is probably helpful to draw a Venn Diagram to solve this problem:

From the Venn diagram, it follows that: x + y + z = 34, x + y = 20, and y + z = 22
